It started when my boyfriend and I began collecting quotes. We literally made a Google Doc to keep track of them. Song lyrics, ‘Pin-spirations,’ lines from books – wherever we found them, if they would sound good hung on a wall or scribbled on a card, in they would go. When he moved in, we discussed creating some quote art to hang out the walls, but we have no shortage of awesome art already, so that project was put on the back-burner. Instead, I took my favorites and turned them into coasters.
This project is a bit time consuming, but the fundamentals are easy. The most artistic aspect is writing the quotes themselves, but if you’re not crazy about your penmanship, you can just print them from a computer instead.
- Blank tiles from a home improvement store
- Quality paper (can be white, colored, or with a light pattern)
- Crafters paste, such as Mod Podge
- Floor protector pads
- Paint Brush
Start by cutting or ripping the paper into squares just smaller than the size of the tile. On each paper square, write a quote down. You can make each in the same style or get creative with your typographic and graphics. Don’t worry about them looking “perfect” – mistakes give them personality!
Coat the top of your tiles in crafters paste and carefully place a quote square on each one, pressing down any wrinkles or bubbles. Once they’ve dried overnight, coat the top of each one in a layer of crafters paste again. This is to seal the paper and prevent any water damage.
When you’re done, you’ll have simple, sturdy coasters! Of course, none of my tables at home are nice enough to require even using coasters in the first place, but they make fantastic personalized gifts. Just select lyrics, quotes, and sayings that match the recipient!
