It seems only appropriate since today is Halloween and I’m dressed up like a cowgirl to talk about my new found love for Southwest inspired bohemian clothing. Geometric patterns, turquoise jewelry, and big flowing skirts make this style whimsical and bold. There’s such a rich history to draw on from the Arizona and New Mexico area, including both the artistic heritage of nearby Mexico and local Native American tribes like the Navaho, Apache, and Hopi.
In the 90s Ralph Lauren did some incredible clothing with Southwest style patterns, but I generally prefer softer colors and the use of neutral solids to balance out the occasionally overwhelming designs. More recently, brands like Free People and Spell Designs have drawn on Southwest fashion to create clothing and lookbooks. (Note: it should also be mentioned that it’s important to be aware of insensitive cultural appropriation when channeling these styles, but I think it’s possible to wear Southwest inspired clothing while still being respectful).
Some of my favorite parts of the Southwest bohemian style include lots of jewelry, big coats and sweaters with bold patterns, faux fur trim, boots, and the use of cow skull prints.
Is this a style you could see yourself wearing?
